Even if you don't consider yourself much of a DIY mechanic when it comes to your own car, it's still a good idea to have some basic tools in your vehicle at all times. This way, if you ever break down or end up stranded on the side of the road, you can have the tools you need to get your car running once again. So, what tools do you need? Read on to find out.
Tire Inflator
Leaky and flat tires are among the most common reasons for breaking down, so having a tire inflator and sealer on hand can make all the difference (and save you the money of having your car towed to a local tire shop). These especially come in handy for filling spare tires. After all, even if you have a spare, there's a good chance that it's been sitting in your trunk for a long time and that it'll have low tire pressure. With an automatic inflator, you can get your spare to the proper PSI for a safe drive.
Tow Strap
A tow strap is also a must in the event that you break down and need to get your car moved to a safe place and away from traffic. If you can flag down a good Samaritan with a pickup truck, you'll have everything you need to tow your dead car a short distance. Just make sure you read your car's owner manual to ensure you're properly hooking up the tow strap. This will help avoid damage or an accident.
Screwdriver/Socket Set
You never know when you're going to need to tighten a loose bolt or other part, so it's always a good idea to have a screwdriver/socket set in your car at all times. This can come in handy when changing a flat tire, fixing loose connections (such as a disconnected battery line or a clamp that's come loose), and much more. Just be sure to keep these items in a well organized case so you can find the exact socket or screwdriver you need right away when you need it.
Escape Device
Finally, in the event of an emergency, an escape device can save your life. These devices are meant to break out a window with just a push of a button or a tap on the glass, which can come in handy in the unlikely (but still possible) event that you find yourself submerged underwater or otherwise trapped in your vehicle.
