3 Tips For Keeping Insects Out Of A Storage Unit

Posted on: 14 March 2016

When you rent a new self-storage unit, you hope there won't be a pest problem. Unfortunately, even when the facility does their part in avoiding pests, some might make their way into your unit. Here are some tips for preventing pests like ants, spiders, cockroaches, and rodents from your stored items.

Use Lidded Containers

One of the best ways you can keep insects and rodents out of your storage unit is to stop using cardboard boxes. These boxes tend to attract certain insects who like cardboard, such as rats and spiders. It also makes it possible for nearly any insect or pest to make their way inside, even if you have a cardboard lid on top. However, with plastic containers that come with airtight lids, there is no way for the pests to invade the container in your unit

You know that while there may be a spider on the outside of the container, it most likely does not have enough space to enter the container. These storage bins also provide some added protection of your belongings, so they are always a good idea.

Keep the Storage Unit Clean

Many insects and rodents are drawn to storage units because they have dust, dirt, and food crumbs. If you use the self-storage unit as a workspace or area where you get some crafting done, make sure you clean up after yourself. You don't have to have a snack while you work and then leave crumbs behind, which can encourage pests to make themselves home in the storage unit. If you are only using the unit for storage purposes, keep it clean by sweeping the unit regularly and removing any cobwebs you find. The cleaner it is, the less of a pest problem you will have.

Reduce Moisture

Another thing that many insects love is a wet, humid space. This is unfortunately something many self-storage units suffer from. You need to keep the unit as dry as possible, which can be done by getting a climate-controlled unit. This allows you to control the temperature and humidity of the unit. You shouldn't have a rain problem if the unit is not on the ground floor. If it is located on the ground, keep all belongings off the ground by placing them on wooden pallets. As long as it is kept dry and with a low level of humidity, you shouldn't have a major pest problem.
