Home break-ins are a common problem in the United States. Since the majority of home break-ins occur during the middle of the day on weekdays, you're especially at risk if you have a traditional 9 to 5 job where you're gone for the majority of the day during the week. Either way, while there's no surefire way to prevent break-ins on your property, there are steps you can take to reduce the risk, such as installing a security system. And for those who want to boost home security on a budget, there are plenty of options for that as well.
Upgrade Your Window Treatments
If burglary is the goal, criminals will generally prefer to break into a home when nobody else is home. Therefore, before making a move, they'll peer in through windows to see if anybody is in the home and check driveways for cars. If a thief isn't positive that nobody is home, he or she will likely find another target rather than taking the risk. Therefore, one of the best things you can do to protect your home is to invest in some window treatments that, when closed, make it impossible for an outsider to get a glimpse inside the home.
Trim Large Shrubs or Bushes
Since thieves like to scope out a home before they decide to break in, they also like to look for homes with lots of shrubs, bushes, and other landscaping to hide behind in the process. If you have overgrown landscaping near the windows and other entryways of your home, you might want to consider having them trimmed or removing some of them altogether. This will give would-be criminals less of an opportunity to hide and lurk as they plan their break-ins.
Start or Join a Neighborhood Watch Program
Finally, consider joining a neighborhood watch program for a greater sense of security--or starting one, if your community doesn't have one in place. With a neighborhood watch program, you and your neighbors make an organized effort to be more vigilant and report suspicious activity to others and local police. Not to mention, being part of such a program is completely free; all it takes is a bit of your time and dedication.
As you can see, there are several ways to increase security at your home without spending lots of money in the process. Still, if you can afford it, having a security system like Videotec Corporation installed is probably the best way to deter crime on your property.Share
